First off, I am not an artist. Nor do I play one on TV.
From what I hear, Marvel doesn't use the same paper for every blank cover. Because of that, it's a crap shoot as to what works best on each of the blank covers.
I do remember Clay Mann saying that the X-Men #1 blank cover is his favorite one to work on. He didn't seem super pleased with the way the sketch that I previously posted came out. He even said to me sheepishly, "Is that OK?"
Other people have mentioned that some of the blank covers are "too slick". And still others test the covers to see how they take ink and whether the ink bleeds when it's applied to the cover. I guess you have to experiment.
